Presentation by Paul Grondahl, Author, I Rose Like a Rocket: The Political Education of Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt biographer Paul Grondahl will discuss the dramatic hours when Vice-President Roosevelt climbed Mount Marcy, learned that President William McKinley’s condition had become critical from an assassin’s bullet, undertook a daring midnight wagon ride to the North Creek train depot, and traveled by train to Buffalo, where he was sworn in as the 26th President of the United States. Grondahl’s talk will clarify a lingering mystery about Roosevelt’s long delay at the Tahawus Club before he set out for North Creek.
Grondahl, whose books also include Mayor Corning: Albany Icon, Albany Enigma, is the director of the New York State Writers Institute. In addition, he is an award-winning journalist, who has worked for the Albany Times Union since 1984. His numerous writing awards include the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for Feature Reporting; the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award; two first place national feature writing prizes from The Society for Features Journalism; more than a dozen New York State Associated Press writing contest awards; and the Hearst Eagle Award, the highest recognition for a reporter in the Hearst Corp.

Mark your calendars, history buffs and Theodore Roosevelt fans—as well as Adirondack residents and visitors who enjoy good company and sharp wits!
The Adirondack Experience (ADKX) will be bringing Taps & Trivia to The Public House in North Creek on May 14, in partnership with the 125th Anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s Night Ride to the Presidency Committee.
This special edition of Taps & Trivia will be blending Adirondack-themed categories with questions inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s life, legacy, and pursuits, including his connection to the Adirondacks.
No Teddy Roosevelt expertise is required to play. Questions will be multiple choice, and everyone from casual players to seasoned trivia regulars will be welcome. Gather your party and put your knowledge to the test!

Mary Calvi, Author of If a Poem Could Live and Breathe: A Novel of Teddy Roosevelt’s First Love

Presentation by Mary Calvi, Author and Emmy Award Winning Journalist, Co-anchor at WCBS-TV.
Calvi will talk about her historical novel, which is based upon on love letters between a young Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee. In addition to being the co-anchor of the daily morning and noon news broadcasts at WCBS-TV in New York City, she has been been an anchor for the syndicated newsmagazine Inside Edition. Over the course of her career, Calvi has won 13 New York Emmy Awards.

Presentation by Dr. William Hansard, Ph.D., who will speak about the creation of the digital repository of the Theodore Roosevelt Center.
As a public historian for the Theodore Roosevelt Center, Dr. Hansard develops lectures and presentations for students and public groups, gives guided tours of the Center’s exhibits and library, and assists in reference requests, among other duties. He is also the primary author of posts for the Center’s Substack blog, The Bully Pulpit.
Dr. Hansard, who completed his PhD in History at the University of Texas at Arlington, is a scholar of the United States during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era.

Theodore Roosevelt: Birder, Conservationist, and the Adirondacks

Joan Collins, a prominant Adirondack birding guide, author, and conservationist,will talk about “TR’s Adirondack Birding.”
Theodore Roosevelt, who as a boy loved sketch, identify, and collect birds living in the vicinity of his family’s summer home in Oyster Bay, New York, went on to create more than 50 federal bird reservations during his time as President.
Collins is a New York State licensed bird guide as well as a writer and speaker on ornithology topics. She has led walks and made presentations for many organizations, including Audubon, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the New York State Ornithological Association. She is also the President of Adirondack Avian Expeditions & Workshops, LLC, and has served in leadership roles for the New York State Ornithological Association and the Northern New York Audubon Society.

Edward F. O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Author of The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt: The Women Who Created a President

O’Keefe will discuss his book on Roosevelt, which his publisher describes as “a family love story, revealing how an icon of rugged American masculinity was profoundly shaped by the women in his life, especially his mother, sisters, and wives,”
Prior to becoming the Chief Executive Officer of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation, O’Keefe was a media executive. He held several positions in the news industry, including at ABC News, CNN, and as the founder of the media start-up NowThis.

Jeffrey Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery Historian (2006 – 2025) and author,
will give a talk on the Roosevelt Family at Green-Wood Cemetery, which is a National Historic Site.
Richman has been fascinated by New York City’s history for as long as he can remember. In 2007, after 33 years of practicing law, he became the full-time historian at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Since then, he has led Green-Wood’s projects on the Civil War, World War I, and World War II ,which, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, have identified, written, and posted online biographies for thousands of veterans interred there. He blogs about Green-Wood and his latest discoveries and is the author of three books, including Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery: New York’s Buried Treasure (1998). He has also co-designed two Green-Wood maps and curated several gallery exhibitions, including three on the Civil War and one on Coney Island.

Seth Issacson, Antique Firearms Specialist: Presentation on Firearms Owned and Gifted by Teddy Roosevelt

Seth Issacson, lead historian at the Rock Island Auction Company, will present his research about the firearms owned and gifted by Theodore Roosevelt.
While Isaacson has an interest in a variety of historic firearms, he specializes in muzzleloaders. Roosevelt was known to own and use muzzleloading firearms, including a Hawken-style rifle. Such rifles, often called “buffalo guns,” were used by Roosevelt for hunting.

David Gessner, Author of: Leave it As It Is: A Journey Through Theodore Roosevelt’s American Wilderness

Presentation by David Gessner, Author and Distinguished Professor, University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW)
Profressor Gessner will talk about Roosevelt’s pivotal role in the creation of the National Parks System of the United States.
Gessner is the author of 14 books that blend a love of nature, humor, memoir, and environmentalism, including The Book of Flaco, All the Wild That Remains, Return of the Osprey, Sick of Nature, and Leave It As It Is.. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Ecotone, a literary magazine. His numerous awards include a a Pushcart Prize; the John Burroughs Award for Best Nature Essay; the Association for Study of Literature and the Environment’s award for best book of creative writing; and the Reed Award for Best Book on the Southern Environment (for his book about the Gulf oil spill, The Tarball Chronicles).

Wiegand , a renowned Theodore Roosevelt impersonator, has performed for audiences in all 50 states, from the White House to Yosemite National Park, as well as internationally. His Theodore Roosevelt performances are endorsed by the Congressionally Chartered Theodore Roosevelt Association of Oyster Bay, and have been featured annually at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.

PBS Movie: “A Cowboy’s Ride to the White House”

This documentary recounts the story of a physically challenged young man, a Harvard graduate, who traveled to the Badlands of Dakota Territory in 1883. Theodore Roosevelt came to hunt bison, but wound up buying a ranch and acquiring skills and experiences that would ultimately help make him a war hero and an American President.
Introduced by Adirondack Historian and Author Glenn Pearsall. In conversation with Bill McKibben in discussion of “Teddy Roosevelt as our Greatest Conservation President”.
